On Tuesday, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 hit the nation of Haiti. Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Haiti in the wake of what has been a terrible disaster for one of the poorest nations in the Western Hemisphere. The Haitian people need the help of the United States and the world, as they continue to search for survivors and begin the processes of putting the pieces back together. I encourage you to give generously to the relief efforts now underway. Below is a list of just a few of the organizations responding to this crisis. Please take a moment to consider how best you can help.
The American Red Cross is pledging an initial $200,000 to assist communities impacted by this earthquake. They expect to provide immediate needs for food, water, temporary shelter, medical services and emotional support. They are accepting donations through their International Response Fund.
UNICEF has issued a statement that "Children are always the most vulnerable population in any natural disaster, and UNICEF is there for them." UNICEF requests donations for relief for children in Haiti via their Haiti Earthquake Fund. You can also call 1-800-4UNICEF.
As a UN Special Envoy to Haiti, Bill Clinton appeared on CNN on Wednesday to ask for further assistance in bringing relief to populations on the ground. You can donate through the Clinton Foundation or text HAITI to 20222 to donate $10.
Clinton Bush Haiti Fund is working to provide immediate relief and long-term support to earthquake survivors. They are channeling the collective goodwill around the globe to help the people of Haiti rebuild their cities, their neighborhoods, and their families.
